Koerikei Lodge and Bushman Sanctuary

The Trust is funding the establishment of a sanctuary for the San to ensure continuity of their ancient skills and traditions.

A nucleus of San, dedicated to the ancient values will, with the help of the elders and spiritual leaders, reintroduce the lifestyle which has enabled them to survive for thousands of years.

To ensure the sustainability of this initiative, tourism, both local and international, will be embraced. Their will be no ‘stage managed’ events on view in the sanctuary except for traditional dancing and story-telling in the evenings

All the activities will be focused on maintaining the traditional values and customs of old.

The development will include accommodation for guests as well as accommodation for those San participating in the project. The focus of all development will be on the reduction of our carbon footprint which will include solar as well as other energy sources. Our aim is to be carbon neutral in the entire village. Conservation of the natural environment will be strictly maintained and indeed enhanced with the introduction of fauna and flora compatible with the area.

To enhance the experience of visitors a series of cycling tracks will be established as well as hiking trails in a pristine environment.

A school will be established to see to the educational needs of the San children whose parents are participating. A clinic will form part of the development to cater for guest and staff requirements.

Training will be provided for all participating San in the hospitality environment. This will include Reception, Housekeeping, Kitchen, Maintenance and Security.

To this end job creation, health care, education and skills development will be available to all participants while fostering the concept of "Eco Cultural Tourism" through a living cultural center.

The center will be self sustaining within two years and all profits will be ploughed back into the development to expand this initiative.

Support for this initiative is essential lest we rue the day when the ‘First People’ are confined to the history books.

If we do nothing, this culture, this link between the Stone Age and modern man, will surely die.
